 make 3 line graphs: (1) electron removal energy (ionization energy), (2) atomic size (atomic radius) and (3) electrostatic attraction (electronegativity). You may split this up among classmates you are working with and discuss afterwards.

Graphs should have the trends on the y-axis and elements on the x-axis. 18 element should be graphed by dividing the the number of spaces on the x-axis by the number of elements, spaced accordingly after rounding up. And the trend should be spaced according to the difference between the highest number and the lowest number, divided by the number of spaces on the y-axis. 

Answer the following questions in a notebook and discuss:

(1) For each pair of atoms determine which can lose an electron easier (lower ionization energy), draw a picture, and explain why.

(2) Which has a greater electrostatic attraction to its valence electrons (electronegativity)?

(3) Which has a larger atomic radius? (be sure to draw a picture and explain why).

A new element has been created in the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland and you are on the task force to determine where this new element should be placed on the periodic table using its known properties. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) will be deciding the name of the new element after validating the evidence for its existence.

What properties would you expect of your project focus element based on where it is on the periodic table? Is it very electronegative? Does it have a high ionization energy? Does it have a relatively large atomic radius? Explain and give specific evidence. You should make your own predictions as to the relative properties of your element and use the trends graphs (and other data) as evidence to support your claims.
